About Krav Maga Hawaii
Our History
Krav Maga Hawaii founder Kevin Lewis was first exposed to Krav Maga in the Seychelles in 1986 while serving in the U.S. Navy. Kevin found himself diving with some Finnish Commandos and just happened to be wearing a SHUDO-KAN Karate T-shirt the Finnish team invited him to train with them on the beach. Kevin was impressed with the practical nature of Krav Maga and as luck would have it years later ran into Howard Mallen at a gym Kevin was running in Woodland Hills, Ca. Howard who happened to be wearing a Krav Maga T-shirt that day was surprised to hear Kevin was aware of Krav Maga. Because at that time in the U.S. there were only 3 places to train Krav Maga. (Los Angeles with Darren Levine, New York with Rihan Mizrahi, Miami with Rick Billstein). Howard invited Kevin to a class at the University of Judaism and the rest as they say is history. Kevin's first foray in to Krav Maga was an Advanced class taught by Darren Levine. Kevin began training under Darren from that point forward and later was instrumental in helping Howard, Darren and their partners open the Krav Maga National Training Center in 1996. Kevin already an accomplished instructor of Karate, Celebrity Bodyguard and personal trainer was invited to attend the first Instructor Development program at the National Training Center. At the time this was a year long apprenticeship during that time Kevin got to train with Darren Levine, Marni Levine, Michael Margolin, Dave Bluestein and Amir Perets. From that day forward to today Kevin has refined, trained and instructed Krav Maga. Kevin was involved in a photo editing and content editing role in the Krav Maga books produced by Krav Maga Worldwide. He is the author of the "Idiots Guide to Krav Maga" with David Gilbertson
Krav Maga Hawaii a new beginning
Krav Maga Hawaii, is about Family. Kevin's fist trip to the islands was to reconnect with his sister and her family in Kahuku. Kevin attended BYU Hawaii for a year an easy college choice when you grow up in North Pole, Alaska. Throughout the years Kevin has returned to the islands to reconnect with family and to prepare for Kickboxing and Body Building shows.
As fate would have it Kevin married into a local family and is looking forward to a new chapter with family. It is sincerest desire that you will become part of the Krav Maga Hawaii and become family.
We use an holistic approach to self-defense which includes Situational Awareness, De-escalation, self-defense, fighting and fitness all are necessary. As we develop our skill sets we also develop a deep confidence in our ability to protect our family as well as ourselves. In these challenging times self reliance is of the highest value.
Our classes are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and overall fitness while teaching valuable self-defense skills.
